Film Review: 2012

It seems that the fall of 2009 is a bit of a slow period in films, as there are not really big hit films that you know are going to be good (at least up to a certain point, as can be expected from Hollywood). However, there was one film that was massively hyped and therefore should be watched: 2012. Boy, was that a dissapointment...

The plot has been used in many works of fiction already (yes, even in South Park): according to the Mayan calendar, which was (and still is) one of the most accurate of its time, the world is going to end on winter solstice 2012. In the film, this happens due to massive solar flares that will heat up the Earth and cause giant earthquakes and shifting of the landmass. However, an Indian researcher discovers the phenomenon a few years ealy and warns an American colleague, who passes it on to the authorities. The G8 then start building enourmous arks to save important people, and sell the remaining places for 1 billion euro to the rich.

The film is directed by Roland Emmerich, who we know from a similar disaster movie: Independance Day. However, in Independance Day we had aliens, which we know are always cool; humour and Will Smith. In 2012 we have a lot of water; bad special effects and John Cusack. Not much of a comparison indeed.

So: bad special effects, no fun, terrible acting, ... Let's say I was not very impressed with this film. My rating: 0/5.
