It's the last day of the year again, and while preparing for the annual celebration, it's also time to review the last 365 days. As last year, it's time to review the entertainment industry in 2009.
Film of the year
Winner: Inglourious Basterds
Runner-up: Slumdog Millionaire
While reviewing the list of films I've seen this year, I was presented with a tough choice between the two above listed candidates. They both are way up there in the list of best films ever, but eventually I chose for Quentin Tarantino as the one and only number one. But don't get me wrong, Slumdog Millionaire is so very close, you'd need a photo finish to see the difference.
Game of the year
Winner: Dragon Age Origins
Runner-up: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
As close as the previous category was, so clear was this choice. It's striking that both top games only have been released in the last few months of the year; but where Modern Warfare 2 only occupied me for just over a day, I'm still playing Dragon Age right now, and I will be for a good part of 2010. In fact I've hardly been doing anything else in my free time for the last month or so. I must say it is the most addictive, best made game I have ever played in my life, even surpassing last year's top games. That said, I'm looking forward to more BioWare stuff, Mass Effect 2 and of course Dragon Age 2.
TV show of the year
Winner: The Big Bang Theory
Runner-up: Chuck
Those who remember my choice for best TV show of last year will note that the two same candidates are once again best TV shows of 2009. Only this time, the order is different. I'm not saying that Chuck has lost some of its appeal or that Big Bang has gotten better, it's just a little gut feeling I have that makes me enjoy Big Bang a little more. Could be because Chuck has been off the air for quite some time, but it's just the way I feel, so that's the way it is going to be. I'm still looking forward to the new season of Chuck next month though.
Album of the year
Winner: The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die
Runner-up: Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You
All things concidered, I found 2009 a very bad year in music. There are some great bands with some great songs, but I could only find one album that really blew me away, and that was Invaders Must Die by The Prodigy. The Prodigy is back, and how! It feels and sounds like The Prodigy we all came to know and love a couple of years ago, and they did it again! I still find it very unfortunate that I could not get any tickets to see their show this year, let's hope I get to see them in 2010. As for the runner-up, I had to pick one, so I chose Lily Allen. I'm sorry Lily, but you are way below the Prodigy though...
