Film Review: Sherlock Holmes

The second film I've seen this year is another long-anticipated start of a new franchise: Sherlock Holmes. From director Guy Ritchie, and starring Robert Downey Jr. as the detective, you'd expect a salvo of English jokes and lots of punches, and that is exactly what you get.

There's no need to introduce Sherlock Holmes, London's best known detective living in 221B Baker Street, and his assistant and loyal friend Dr Watson. In the film they are put against Lord Blackwood, who has murdered five people, found guilty and executed for his crimes. However Sherlock's wits are one again put to the test, when suddenly Lord Blackwoord rises from the grave and plots to attack the British Parliament.

The film was much-anticipated and frankly makes for a good night of theatrical entertainment. Don't expect much more, and you will leave the cinema with a warm and happy feeling. Also, it seems as if the door has been left open for a sequel, so this was probably not the last time we see the detective on the big screen in his current setting.

Final verdict: 3/5.
