This week in the cinema, we ended up watching From Paris With Love, a French film which surprisingly looks like an American film. Kind of like Belgian director Erik van Looy did with De zaak Alzheimer but by even going one step further and replacing the French actors with well-known American actors, John Travolta in this case.
The story revolves around James Reece, the assistant of the American ambassador in Paris who occasionally does small time handiwork for the CIA, however he would like to climb up the spy ladder and do more serious work. When he is assigned to team up with one of the most experienced American spies to stop a terrorist threat, his wish finally comes true.
When John Travolta is playing a gun slinging hero, you know you can expect lots of shooting, swearing and the occasional pass at a girl. And to nobody's surprise, that is exactly what you get in this film. Just sit back and enjoy the wild ride of murder and destruction throughout Paris. If you're looking for a deeper second layer of intrigue, stop looking because you won't find it. The whole film is nothing more than one long shootout, however the director did a nice job referring to one of Travolta's more famous roles, that of Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, when he orders the French version of a quarter pounder: the Royale with cheese.
Final verdict: 2/5.
