Seems somebody has started cleaning out their basement, found Mel Gibson, dusted him off and put him on the big screen again as Thomas Craven in Edge of Darkness a ruthless thriller about murder and conspiracy.
The second film I've seen this year is another long-anticipated start of a new franchise: Sherlock Holmes. From director Guy Ritchie, and starring Robert Downey Jr. as the detective, you'd expect a salvo of English jokes and lots of punches, and that is exactly what you get.
Note to my English speaking readers: As this week's film review as about a Flemish film, this post will be in Dutch. Don't let this stop you to watch The Misfortunates as it is called in English, as it is one of the best films of the year.
Last film that was still on the to-blog-about list was the latest version of The taking of Pelham 1 2 3. I say latest version, because I'm sure I have seen this film (with different actors of course) some years ago on the TV already. IMDB seems to confirm there are other versions of it, but I can't remember which one I've seen...
About two weeks ago, we went to see State of Play. We actually had no idea what to see, since we were saving Transformers until a friend could join us (she was busy that night). Some local magazines had given the film some good reviews, and as it turned out they were correct.
It's been a couple of very busy weeks for me, so I've once again had some delay in blogging about the films we've seen recently, so it's time to catch up. Recently, we've seen The Hangover. A friend of mine called this "kinda like one of those teen movies, but with older people", and that's pretty much what it was. Quite funny, and very entertaining.
This week it was a men's night out only at the cinema, which means we had free choice of the film, and we were free to choose a (by reputation) female-unfriendly film. This turned out to be X-Men Origins: Wolverine which was actually surprisingly good. After X-Men 3 it was refreshing to see a film in the X-Men franchise that actually made some sense.
Just like every other Trekkie out there, I was quite skeptical when infamous Lost-fuck-it-upper J.J. Abrams was announced to be the director of the next Star Trek film (which we all hoped would get some new life into the franchise after Enterprise), but as it turns out things were not too bad. It will take some time to get used to the new way of doing things, but I'm actually quite confident there will be a sequel after this one.
After the huge success of Loft in the Belgian cinemas, the Flemish film industry seems to be in a lift, judging by the unusually high numbers of Flemish films in the theatre this year. This week we watched another one: SM-Rechter. Surprisingly good, actually.
Let's be honest, when I read the first review or synopsis for Zack And Miri Make A Porno I was absolutely unimpressed. I though it would be yet another romantic comedy made for men to take their girlfriends to and make sure they get laid that night, but it turned out to be quite funny and not cheesy at all.
